Book Review: Skippy Dies by Paul Murray

One Sentence Summary: This book is about what happens before and after a teen at a boarding school in Ireland dies in a donut shop.

Number of Pages: 661

Rating: 2/5 stars

Review: Skippy Dies couldn't decide if it wanted to be young adult or not, and it suffered by not really appealing to either audience at all. At 661 pages this was a hefty book and took some slogging to get through. It contained plenty of tangents—science, history, folklore—none of which were particularly interesting or worth reading. It also suffered from having too many characters that weren’t important to the plot in any way. Removing 200+ pages and ten characters would only have helped make Skippy Dies a better read. I liked two things about this book. The first was how the author wrote Carl. The author really showed you a look inside of this creeper of a dude’s head, so much so that reading from his point of view made me quite uncomfortable. The second thing I liked was the humor. There were some laugh out loud moments. This book had the potential to be good, but didn’t live up to my expectations. I’d say, if you’re not feeling this book 50 pages in, do yourself a favor and find something else to read.
